Intro Eigo was founded with the intention to do things our own way and to try to give something back to the world. We have achieved this through such things as running summer schools for local students, building apps and websites to support the community and of course trying to minimise our environmental impact. We always endeavour to recycle as much of our waste as possible, such as paper, metal glass etc. also being an IT company this has meant doing extra things like finding new homes for old computer equipment.

Offices We have implemented policies to reduce carbon foot print of our offices, for example we have: - Had a modern energy efficient central heating system installed to replace the old one when we recently acquired the lease on our office building.
- Running systems on different power loops to make it easy to maintain switched off at the wall all equipment not immediately in use.
- 50% of work force switched to public transport or cycling
- Car pooling
- Home working
Data Centre The biggest use of electricity for Eigo is our data centre, this is where we host client systems, websites, email servers etc... Over the years Eigo has massively reduced its power usage in its data centre by a number of methods - Upgrading to modern power efficient servers
- Using physically smaller servers which means we can fit more servers in each rack
- Changing to use virtual servers to load balance many virtual servers over fewer physical machines. This has the added benefits of reducing downtime caused by hardware failures and making huge power savings. This cloud computing allows us to vary our power usage as demand on our servers changes.
- Changing data centre rack space providers, we have changed many times until we found our current provider IOMart who have an ambitious environmental policy
Looking Forward We are a very flexible company and always trying out the latest ideas and technologies and as soon as we find a way to save power or increase efficiency we are bound to implement it. Eigo is currently working with ENVIBE to asses and further reduce our emissions.
