Apple does not give any clear information away about current approval time for applications. Due to the vast amount of apps submitted to the app store, it is likely Apple do not know for sure themselves when your app can be picked up and reviewed.

We have profiled the app store submission and approval times for some of our own applications to give an estimate on how long you can expect your app to take from submission, to review, to approval (or refusal).

Results

These are example submission times taken from one of our applications that has been updated. Numbers are rounded up to the nearest hour or half hour.

New Application Approval

This is a good benchmark for applications being submitted and approved.

Date Status Delta Time
0 days, 0 hours Waiting for Review + 0 days, 0 hours
+ 5 days, 22 hours In Review + 5 days, 22 hours
+ 5 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes Ready for Sale + 1 hour, 30 minutes

From Waiting for Review to In Review: 5 days, 22 hours
From In Review to Ready for Sale: 1 hour 30 minutes

Version Update

The short time from Waiting for Review to In Review could indicate that Apple prioritise application updates over new applications, maybe to ensure that any bug fixes in updates that developers put out are available to the user as quickly as possible – keeping the reputation of the apps on the app store in good stead.

Date Status Delta Time
0 days, 0 hours Waiting for Review + 0 days, 0 hours
+ 10 days, 3 hours In Review + 10 days, 3 hours
+ 11 days, 4 hours Ready for Sale + 1 day, 1 hour

From Waiting for Review to In Review: 10 days, 3 hours
From In Review to Ready for Sale: 1 day, 1 hour

New Application Refusal

Initial review took a very long time which was probably due to the large amount of apps posted on to the App Store for review to coincide with the release of the Apple iPad.
The review process took less than a day.

Time Status Delta Time
0 days, 0 hours Waiting for Review + 0 days, 0 hours
+ 1 month, 5 days, 0 hours In Review + 1 month, 5 days
+ 1 month, 5 days, 16 hours Refusal + 16 hours

From Waiting for Review to In Review: 1 month, 5 days
From In Review to Refusal: 16 hours

New Application Approval after refusal

We could assume that this process would take less time than a new application approval but it is likely they check the entire application again as the application code has been back in the developer’s hands – at which time any amount of code could have changed.

Tiime Status Delta Time
0 days, 0 hours Waiting for Review + 0 days, 0 hours
+ 7 days, 6 hours In Review + 7 days, 6 hours
+ 8 days, 8 hours Ready for Sale + 1 day, 2 hours

From Waiting for Review to In Review: 7 days, 6 hours
From In Review to Ready for Sale: 1 day, 2 hours
